ZAGREB, June 3 (Hina) - The president of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) and former Prime Minister, Ivica Racan, said on Friday that after yesterday's visit by ICTY Chief Prosecutor Carla del Ponte to Zagreb, one should not make final assessments of whether or not the Prosecutor's Office had "softened" its position towards Croatia, adding that one needed to wait for del Ponte's report before the UN Security Council.

"No calculations should be made, it is better to wait for the report. I refrain from making an assessment and I suggest the government do the same," Racan told reporters in parliament who were interested in his opinion about the results of del Ponte's meeting with Prime Minister Ivica Sanader.

He stressed that as a former PM, he held talks with del Ponte on several occasions and that speaking from experience, he could say that the prosecutor's assessments depend on the time and place where they are given.

"There is one certainty. During or after the talks that were held here, her (del Ponte's) statements were always milder and showed more understanding for the Croatian situation, than those given two, three or five days later in New York or in the EU. This calls for cautiousness," Racan said.

"Immediately after yesterday's talks, one of the senior officials who attended the meeting gave me his assessment - a blinking green light and that can be both good and bad. This is why calculations should not be made.," Racan said.
