KISHINEV, May 30 (Hina) - The level of economic cooperation between Croatia and Moldova is unacceptably low and it is necessary to activate the existing great potentials, Moldovan Prime Minister Vasile Tarlev and the visiting Croatian President Stjepan Mesic agreed at their meeting in Kishinev on Monday.

Both countries are interested in boosting economic cooperation. Croatia showed interest in exporting machines and equipment for the food industry, pharmaceutical products and consumer goods, while Moldova said it was interested in exporting tobacco, wine, meat, medicinal herbs and fruit juice.

On the subject of regional cooperation, Mesic said that Croatia was interested in cooperation primarily through the Danube Initiative and the Central European Initiative, while Tarlev said that his country was very interested in establishing closer ties with Croatia via the Danube.

European Union membership is the strategic interest of both countries. Croatia must meet the condition of full cooperation with the Hague war crimes tribunal before the EU opens membership talks with it.

"We fully cooperate with the Hague tribunal because we believe that individualisation of guilt will have an effect on our relations with our neighbours. When specific people are called to justice, cooperation between the countries of the former Yugoslavia will be more effective," the Croatian president said.

During today's talks it was agreed that the chief Croatian negotiator with the EU, Vladimir Drobnjak, would visit Moldova to convey Croatia's experience on its path towards the bloc.

On Tuesday, Mesic is scheduled to meet Parliament Speaker Marijan Lupu.
