ZAGREB, May 26 (Hina) - Croatian Radio and Television (HRT) on Thursday issued a press release responding to criticism which Croatian Democratic Union (HDZ) member of parliament Andrija Hebrang levelled against it during Tuesday's parliamentary debate on Social Democratic Party's motion to exempt the HRT from paying Value Added Tax.

In the parliamentary debate on changes to the Law on VAT, Hebrang said that the Croatian Television (HTV) was less and less performing its public function.

The information provided is politically and ideologically motivated, Hebrang said, citing as an example Monday's "Latinica" political program which was dedicated to "yugonostalgia".

The HRT says in the press release that opinions expressed in the Latinica as well as in any other authored shows are not the position of the HRT but of participants in the shows. "Contrary to Hebrang who is afraid of opinions with which he disagrees, the HRT believes that the Croatian state is democratically and political stable to the sufficient extent that it can tolerate such (or different) opinions".

Hebrang also accused the HTV television of having gone beyond the framework of a public institution and entered market competition. He criticised the HRT management for conducting business uneconomically and for avoiding obligations towards the state.

In this context, the HRT says that public media such as the HRT cannot be public if it financially depends on the political authorities.

With regard to the business performance, the HRT says that it managed to collect almost 99 percent of debts for 2004 and that all contracts are honoured.
