ZAGREB, May 12 (Hina) - Attorney Marijan Pedisic and retired police officer Salih Fazlic denied on Thursday any connection with the forging of a passport for fugitive Hague war crimes tribunal indictee Ante Gotovina, while Franjo Katavic owned up to the crime.

At his second interview with Zagreb County Court investigating Judge Zdenko Posavec, Katavic said that he had also forged a passport for Hrvoje Petrac, another fugitive wanted in Croatia for kidnapping, a court source said on condition of anonymity.

Given that the forgery of the Petrac passport is not part of the investigation, this part of the testimony was dismissed.

Katavic told the investigating judge that Fazlic had ordered a forged passport for Gotovina and that Pedisic, one of Gotovina's attorneys, was behind everything. He said he did not know the attorney personally but did know the police officer. Katavic said Fazlic had given him two photographs of Gotovina and later collected the forged passport.

Given that there is no material evidence in this case, confession by one of the suspects is the only thing based on which the state prosecutor may issue an indictment, said the unnamed source.

Pedisic and Katavic have been charged with inciting Katavic to forge a passport for Gotovina, making them Gotovina's accessories after the fact. Today they dismissed the accusations.

Speaking to the press, Pedisic declined to speak about his interview. He said the investigating judge had not shown him any evidence against him or informed him what the charges against him had been based on. He said he did not know what Katavic had said at the second interview.

Fazlic's attorney Rajko Coguric said his client had no connection with the other two suspects.

Judge Posavec said today's interview had wrapped up the investigation in the case, which is now being referred to the state prosecutor's office to either issue an indictment or dismiss the charges.
