Rupel said this commenting on some public assessments according to which the support of the incumbent Slovene government to Croatia and its path to the EU was too open. According to the Slovene press, Slovene diplomats were not looking after national interests.
"The best way for Slovenia to achieve its national interest is within the frameworks of the European Union. Our position in the European Union, economic position and the way of representing our interest will depend on their defense in Brussels, for example during Croatia's joining the EU," Rupel said.
He dismissed assessments that Slovenia was to soft to Croatia.
"Even though sometimes it seems that we are to kind to our southern neighbour, we react to incidents in a European manner. All those issue will be on the agenda during Croatia's negotiations for joining the EU and then our word will have a stronger effect," Rupel said.
