"The leaders of the Bosnia-Herzegovina political parties took a major step towards providing (the country) with a modern police service that will fight crime and serve citizens (...) and towards fulfilling the requirements laid out in the EC Feasibility Study," Solana said in a statement.
The three-day negotiations of 11 Bosnian political parties, which took place in total isolation in a hotel on Mount Vlasic, central Bosnia, resulted in an agreement on establishing a police service that will operate without political influence and on the transfer of police powers to the state level.
"It is vitally important that the politicians continue the work they have begun and carry it to a successful conclusion by finalising the details of the Vlasic Agreement and incorporating the complete agreement in enacted legislation," Solana said.
"The party leaders have shown wisdom, foresight and good faith, which has carried them this far; it can carry them and the whole of Bosnia-Herzegovina to a successful conclusion," the statement said.
