SARAJEVO, April 13 (Hina) - For the first time after the war, Bosnia-Herzegovina has been given an integrated data network which is expected to enable the country's police forces to fight organised crime and terrorism more effectively.

A memorandum on the development and use of that network was signed in Sarajevo on Wednesday by representatives of the Bosnian authorities, the US Embassy and the Office of the European Commission in the country.

Bosnian Security Minister Barisa Colak said that the US government and the EC had invested sizeable funds in the crime analysis network and that the project would make the country a much safer area.

Over the past two years, the EC provided 729,000 euros through the CARDS programme for the establishment of an integrated police information system, while the US provided 2.1 million dollars.

The project will make it possible for police agencies on the state level and ministries of the interior in the country's two entities and cantons, as well as the Brcko District police to have access to a single data base containing information on persons connected with organised crime or terrorism.

EC Mission chief Michael Humphreys said the EU was interested in ensuring the rule of law in Bosnia-Herzegovina and putting an end to the spreading of crime to new EU members.

The charge d'affaires at the US Embassy, Tina Kaidanow, said that her country had given 40 million dollars in the last three years alone for the strengthening of the police and the judiciary in Bosnia and that it intended to secure more funds in the future.
