BANJA LUKA, April 10 (Hina) - The President of the High Council of Judges and Prosecutors of Bosnia-Herzegovina (VSTS), Branko Peric, said in an interview with the Banja Luka newspaper Nezavisne Novine on Sunday that politicians "have lost mechanisms of pressure on judicial institutions" following the reform of the justice system in the country and creation of an independent judiciary.

Peric said that even ministers and top state officials were no longer absolved from criminal responsibility, and added that the country's supreme court was ready for war crimes trials.

"Judges and prosecutors of the Court of Bosnia-Herzegovina are ready to apply the highest European standards in those cases," he stressed.

Peric said that foreign judges and prosecutors would be present at war crimes trials, and added that the War Crimes Chamber would consist of a domestic judge as presiding judge and two foreign judges as members.

The Court of Bosnia-Herzegovina has so far received 10,000 reports on war crimes.

"The court cannot try 10,000 persons. The court cannot focus on war crimes only and forget organised crime, corruption and crime in general. We must create the necessary conditions for society to recover and look to the future, and that is not a simple process," Peric said.
