ZAGREB, April 22 (Hina) - Croatia has great potential for development of information technology and telecommunications, and although there have been some delays, the appearance of the Optima Telekom company, as an operator on the fixed telephony market to be the first competitor to the T-HT company, shows that this market is starting to be liberalised, Croatian President Stjepan Mesic said on Friday when he officially marked the start the work of the Optima Telekom company.

The liberalisation of the telecommunications market in Croatia is proceeding at a slow pace, but it is going on as we have now new operators in fixed and mobile telephony, which is resulting in stronger competition on that market and more favourable prices, the president said.

He added that he supported such trends which would help not only businessmen but also the state institutions to be more involved in the use of the broad-band Internet.

Speaking about the start of the work of the Optima Telekom, chairman of the the company's managing board, Roland Zuvanic said that the Telecommunications Agency was currently conducting a technical examination of the company and that the first users would be able to use the company's services in a few days' time.

So far, Optima Telekom has invested 160 million kuna so as to begin with its business activities, and it is planning new investments until the end of this year.

Zuvanic said that during five months after it was given the licence, the company succeeded in establishing its own national network, which would be independent of the telephone infrastructure of the T-HT.
