SPLIT, April 21 (Hina) - The Split County Court on Thursday turned down appeals by five former police officers against a decision to launch an investigation into war crimes committed against prisoners of war in the military prison of Lora in Split in 1992, court officials said.

The five police officers, already charged with war crimes in Lora, are suspected of having tortured about 30 Bosnian Serb POWs, members of paramilitary units and the former Yugoslav People's Army.

Three prisoners allegedly died as a result of the torture.

The former police officers under investigation are Ante Gudic, Tonci Vrkic, Andjelko Botic, Tomislav Duic and Emilijo Bungur.

Gudic, Vrkic and Botic have been in detention since last September, while Duic and Bungur are on the run.
