ZAGREB, April 19 (Hina) - Prime Minister Ivo Sanader has rejected criticism against the economic policy of his cabinet as unfounded.

Opening three international fairs at the Zagreb Trade Fair Centre on Tuesday, Sanader said that those objections were not based in fact, and presented a series of macroeconomic indicators, stressing that groundless criticism would no longer be tolerated.

The Croatian government will do all that is necessary to increase the competitiveness of Croatian companies, their presence on international markets and their exports.

"Criticism, motivated by petty politics, will not produce any result," the premier said, alluding to critical comments made by President Stjepan Mesic on Monday regarding the government's economic policy.

Sanader accused Mesic's advisors of advising him poorly.

Responding to criticism, the premier said that last year world credit rating agencies improved Croatia's credit rating. In addition, the growth of exports was speedier than the growth of imports, last year 20,000 new jobs were created, the budgetary deficit fell from 6.3 percent of the Gross Domestic Product in 2003 to 4.9 percent, Sanader said among other things.

The three international fairs in the construction and interior design sector, which will last until 23 April, pooled 1,605 exhibitors from 31 countries.

Later while he was touring pavilions, Sanader told reporters that there was no problem if President Mesic would like to attend the government's session.

"Mesic and I have a good and constructive relationship. In this case the problem was in the fact that somebody misinformed him," Sanader told reporters.
