LJUBLJANA, April 3 (Hina) - The chairman of the European Union Committee of Regions, Peter Straub, has recently proposed that Slovenia be divided into three statistical regions, which may improve its chances for being granted assistance from European funds for the equal regional development.

Slovenia has been traditionally arranged into 12 historical provinces. The Constitution's restrictions have not so far allowed Ljubljana to organise its provinces into statistical regions so that less developed regions can apply for funds from the funds aimed at the European cohesion and solidarity.

From the aspects of financial means, it will be an optimum solution to arrange the country into three regions, as two of them would be entitled to EU funds, and all of this would ensure an even and sustainable regional development of the entire country, Straub said during his visit to Ljubljana last week.

The most-developed part of the country, namely central Slovenia with the capital of Ljubljana, would not be entitled to the funds.
