ZAGREB, March 24 (Hina) - Radimir Cacic, the chairman of the main committee of the Croatian People's Party / Liberal Democrats, on Thursday presented the latest economic indicators in the country in the context of the recent decision by the European Union to postpone membership talks with Croatia.

Cacic told a news conference in Zagreb that those trends revealed a poor economic situation as well as incompetence of the incumbent Croatian government.

The total sum of the country's debt is higher than ever, amounting to 98 billion kuna, which means that the government managed to incur a debt of 15 billion kuna in a year, Cacic said.

He said that the previous coalition government, whose member Cacic's party was, began its four-year term with a debt of 60 billion kuna, and ended with a debt of 83 billion.

Cacic added that the current budgetary deficit of 6.1 percent was the highest in the last six years.

He also criticised the Ivo Sanader cabinet for lower pensions and a fall in salaries.

In the last two months the average salary has dropped by four percent. The average salary for last November was 576 euros, while the salary for February was 557 euros, he said.

He pointed out the 3.3-percent inflation rate as the highest in the past four years.

"This kind of policy run by the HDZ, namely a deficit, smaller salaries, inflation, results in unemployment which has remained a key problem of this country," the HNS official said.
