SARAJEVO, March 10 (Hina) - Bosnian Prime Minister Adnan Terzic has said that the temporary introduction of customs duties on some food products that are imported from Croatia would not jeopardise the existing free trade agreement between the two countries.

In a statement carried by Sarajevo's Dnevni Avaz daily on Thursday, Terzic said that he had no intention of abandoning the existing free trade agreement and that the latest decision of the Bosnian government was actually aimed at salvaging it.

"Last year Bosnia-Herzegovina imported 1.1 billion convertible marks worth of goods from Croatia. This measure affects less ten percent of those imports. We are not making any problems when it comes to other goods, although we would have a reason to do so, for example, when it comes to oil," Terzic said.

Terzic said that over the past year the two sides had negotiated about problems with milk and meat imports, but the negotiations were unsuccessful.

"Between Europe and good neighbourly relations on one side and our farmers on the other, we had to choose the farmers," Terzic said.

He criticised the governments of Bosnia's two entities, saying that they had not done anything in the past year to make it possible for the agricultural sector to withstand open market competition which started with the liberalisation of trade with Bosnia's neighbours.

Terzic believes that the way out of the current situation is the establishment of an agriculture ministry on the state level and the transfer of powers in the agricultural sector from the entity governments to the Council of Ministers, which is the state government.
