The protest was supported by the Federation of Independent Trade Unions of Croatia (SSH), whose commissioner in the central town of Ogulin, Jasna Kirasic, said that union representatives and protesters would hold a meeting in Zagreb on Thursday and that representatives of the competent ministry had been invited to the meeting.
Worker Drazen Sertic said that the tunnel would remain blocked and that works would not be performed until the workers received their wages and severance pays.
Engineer Drago Jaksic, who seeks three overdue salaries, said that the contractor Coopconsttrutori owed workers a total of three million kuna due to unresolved relations with the Croatian Highways company, which is the investor.
Works on the tunnel were discontinued back on November 30 and the workers have not received any explanation since then, Jaksic said.
