SPLIT, Feb 17 (Hina) - Tonci Vrkic, a defendant in the Lora war crimes case who started refusing prison food two weeks ago in protest against the slowness of court proceedings, started taking regular meals on Thursday, Split County Prison chief Zoran Raguzin said.

Vrkic is one of four defendants in custody of the eight accused for war crimes against Serb civilians committed at the Lora military investigation centre in the southern Adriatic city of Split in 1992.

Another defendant in custody, Andjelko Botic, today issued a statement in relation to the pace of the court proceedings, saying the Split County Court should set a date for the retrial as soon as possible.

In the statement delivered to the press at the court by attorney Rene Laura, Botic said he decided to address the public after more than 500 in custody because he was "irritated" by the attitude of the state, the judiciary and especially the media, which he said labelled him a war criminal before a verdict was handed down.
