ZAGREB, March 7 (Hina) - A parliamentary deputy of the Istrian
Democratic Party (IDS), Damir Kajin, has said that a memorandum on military
cooperation between Croatia and the United States will very likely be adopted
in the Sabor without the votes of IDS MPs and that, consequently, the US and
Croatian military will use the potential of the Pula airport fifteen days every
year regardless of what the local community thinks.Commenting on the memorandum at a news conference in Pazin on Monday,
Kajin said they were "aware of the fact that there is no (entry into) the
European Union without NATO, and that without the EU, Croatia will remain stuck
in the Balkans. Nevertheless, Croatia should not let the United States use its
seven or eight military ranges or make its most lucrative economic facilities
available to the American (forces)," the IDS official said.
He went on to say that his party always advocated the demilitarisation
of Istria and was against joint US-Croatian military manoeuvres.
Croatia can improve its prospects by economic activities rather than
military ones, Kajin said.
