SKOPJE, Feb 25 (Hina) - The interior ministers of Western Balkan countries, who were attending a two-day ministerial conference on border control in Skopje, signed a joint declaration on border cooperation on Friday and concluded that Croatia had made the greatest progress in this field.

The conference was being attended by the interior ministers of the countries covered by the Stabilisation and Association Process with the European Union, and representatives of the EU, the OSCE and NATO. Croatia was represented by Interior Minister Marijan Mlinaric.

The meeting analysed achievements in the process of establishing a system of cooperation in border control for this year year and the next.

Participants agreed that it was necessary to cooperate and to apply standards that would ensure an effective fight against terrorism and all forms of crime in order to protect their own countries and the future borders of the European Union.

It was concluded that Croatia had made the greatest progress in strengthening the standards of the border police service and the state border.

Speaking to reporters, Mlinaric said that this was mainly due to training of the border police.

Croatia has recently completed a project of integrated border management under the sponsorship of Germany, Austria and Slovenia, and passed a series of laws and decrees relating to the border police service.

Mlinaric said that Croatia expected to have a Schengen-style border in place by 2009.

The conference heard that other countries in the region had only started introducing border police services.

Mlinaric met on the margins of the conference with his Serbian counterpart, Dragan Jocic.
