Del Ponte says Karadzic and Mladic occasionally staying in Montenegro

PODGORICA, Feb 2 (Hina) - The chief prosecutor of the UN war crimestribunal in The Hague, Carla Del Ponte, said in Podgorica on Wednesdaythat the tribunal's most wanted indictees Radovan Karadzic and RatkoMladic were not staying in one place and were visiting Montenegro fromtime to time.
PODGORICA, Feb 2 (Hina) - The chief prosecutor of the UN war crimes tribunal in The Hague, Carla Del Ponte, said in Podgorica on Wednesday that the tribunal's most wanted indictees Radovan Karadzic and Ratko Mladic were not staying in one place and were visiting Montenegro from time to time.

The Hague tribunal wants Podgorica to collect information about runaway indictees even if they are visiting Montenegro for only a few hours, Del Ponte said.

The tribunal has new information on Karadzic's hideouts, Del Ponte said, adding that she had stopped publicising information about the hideouts of Karadzic, Mladic and others, although she was in possession of new information.

Speaking to reporters after a meeting with Montenegrin President Filip Vujanovic, Del Ponte said the reason why she was visiting Montenegro when it was known that Belgrade was responsible for noncooperation with the tribunal, was that she was in possession of information that some fugitives were visiting Montenegro from time to time.

Asked why she demanded from Belgrade and Podgorica that Karadzic and Mladic be arrested if she had previously stated in Sarajevo that she would reveal the names of international officials obstructing the arrest of the two fugitives by the end of the year, Del Ponte said that she was exerting pressure both on the local authorities and the international community.

She added that if Karadzic and Mladic were not handed over this year, she would present evidence to prove that their arrest was being obstructed.

President Vujanovic and other Montenegrin officials reiterated that Montenegro was determined to cooperate fully and unconditionally with the tribunal.
