ZAGREB, Feb 2 (Hina) - The Croatian parliament wrapped up its session on Wednesday with a debate on a proposal put forward by the Croatian Democratic Union (HDZ) to establish a commission to investigate whether Radimir Cacic of the People's Party (HNS) and Zlatko Tomcic of the Peasant Party (HSS) were in conflict of interest at the time when they held the posts of Reconstruction and Development Minister and Parliament President respectively.

Emil Tomljanovic of the HDZ said the purpose of the proposal was to establish if companies owned by Cacic and Tomcic had committed illegal activities when bidding for and signing contracts with the government.

The establishment of the commission was supported by the HDZ, the Party of Rights (HSP), the HSS and the HNS, while the Social Democratic Party (SDP), the Istrian Democratic Party (IDS) and the Democratic Centre/Croatian Social Liberal Party (DC/HSLS) opposed the proposal.

Deputies of the HSS and the HNS said that it was high time to establish the real state of affairs and put an end to the ongoing campaign aimed at smearing their leaders.

Nenad Stazic of the SDP said that the sole purpose of the proposal was to settle accounts with political opponents.

Frano Piplovic of the DC/HSLS club of deputies proposed that a consensus be reached to impose a moratorium on the establishment of commissions of inquiry because, he said, Croatia faced much more important work considering upcoming EU membership talks.

The debate on the HDZ motion will continue on Thursday.
