Union leader says workers the only losers in sale of Croatian Telecom to Deutsche Telekom

ZAGREB, Jan 28 (Hina) - The Croatian Workers' Trade Union has said that the recently published summary of contracts on the sale of Croatian Telecom (HT) shares to Deutsche Telekom (DT) bears witness to the fact that HT workers are the only losers in this case.

The published summary is only a part of the project to "sell the family silver" because it does not include the most important facts, such as how much shares the government should have to have the right to veto decisions and when HT shares will be available on the stock market, Union leader Jadranko Vehar told reporters on Friday.

Vehar believes that the real information about the harmfulness of the contracts will be available only when the entire project is made public.

"It is interesting that DT increased its offer from 450 million to 850 million euros when buying the first bunch of shares. Obviously some concessions were made to DT," Vehar said.

He warned that since it purchased HT shares the German company had not created new jobs but only filled the existing ones, and that it had failed to meet its obligations regarding investments totalling 748 million euros.

Of the 11,000 workers who worked for HT when DT arrived, only some 6,000 will remain employed at the end of this year, Vehar said, warning that former and current HT and Croatian Post workers had been waiting for six years to exercise their right to buy seven percent of company shares under more favorable conditions.

Vehar believes that DT is exerting pressure on the government not to sell the shares to workers so as to protect the company and prevent workers from selling their shares to a third party.

If the unions do not stage strikes and protest rallies, there will be no agreement on the sale of seven percent of shares to former and current HT workers this year either, Vehar said.
