ZAGREB, Jan 19 (Hina) - The leader of the Libra party, Jozo Rados, has said that the unification of the Croatian People's Party (HNS) and Libra into the HNS-Liberal Democrats party was the first case of unification of two parliamentary parties based on party platforms and that it marked the beginning of a new phase in Croatian politics.

"We want to strengthen the centrist political option," Rados said at a news conference in Zagreb on Wednesday.

Asked if Libra had had problems with its coalition partner, the Social Democrats, because of the announced unification with the HNS, Rados said that there had been no problems, except for some "nervous reactions".

Speaking about the 2004 agreement with the Liberal Party (LS), Rados said it had little chance of success and that for the time being Libra would not make any new decisions because of its upcoming unification with the HNS.

Commenting on the LS, Rados said that his main objection referred to the party's unilateral decision to sign an agreement on cooperation with the Social Liberal Party (HSLS) and the fact that the LS presidency had supported the recent agreement on the integration of LS and Libra branches in Split. Following the latter agreement, Rados dissolved the executive committee of Libra's Split branch.

The agreement casts a serious shadow on the Libra-LS coalition on the national level, he said.

Libra vice-president Zrinjka Glovacki Bernardi said that Libra and the HNS had already prepared a joint platform for the upcoming local elections.

Rados said the two parties would formally unite after February 6, when each party is due to hold a convention.
