ZAGREB, Jan 15 (Hina) - In Croatia, 29.2 percent of population are poor, according to a survey two Catholic agencies: Caritas and the Centre for the Promotion of Social Teaching of the Church, carried out in March and April 2004. The survey covered 1,216 adult citizens.

Presenting the results of the survey last week, Catholic Church dignitary, Professor Stjepan Baloban, said that "poverty is a social problem and a political topic, but the political elite does not address it".

The one-member household with the monthly income of 1,500 kuna is at a relative poverty line. The two-member family with the monthly income of 2,250 is considered to be stricken by poverty. The family with two adults and one child is in the category of poor citizens if it has the monthly income of 2,700 kuna. The household with two adults and two children is in this category if its monthly income is 3,150 kuna.

Caritas reported last summer also figures about how many citizens felt subjectively that they were poor. In the part of the survey, 15.5 percent of respondents said they were poor.
