ZAGREB, Jan 14 (Hina) - The Justice Ministry said in a statement on Friday that a task force drawing up amendments to the Penal Code was discussing the police union's proposal for stricter punishment for the killing of and assault on officers in the line of duty.

The statement was a reaction to today's claim by Croatian Police Union president Dubravko Jagic, who said Justice Minister Vesna Skare-Ozbolt was the main culprit for the murder of a policeman yesterday because she had rejected the union's demands for stricter punishment for those who kill and assault police.

The ministry recalled the current Penal Code envisaged 8-40 years' imprisonment for killing a police officer in the line of duty.

The Police Union today asked the Government to amend the Penal Code and the Police Act within 30 days or the union would go on strike. The union asked for stricter punishment for those who assault police officers and simpler rules for the use of firearms.
