The protest lasted only some 15 minutes because the police banned it yesterday, stating that it would impede traffic because of the large number of protesters.
The Action of Social Democrats (ASH) party, which organised the rally, seeks from the government to pay its debt to pensioners, reform the pension system, and have privileged pensions for members of parliament abolished.
Addressing the protesters, ASH leader Zlatko Klaric said that if the government failed to meet those demands, the party would call on pensioners from all over the country to stage a protest rally in front of the government and parliament buildings in Zagreb in two months' time.
After Klaric's address, the protesters dispersed peacefully.
The pensioners also called on the leadership of the ruling Croatian Democratic Union (HDZ), whose offices are located in the same square where the protest was held, to address them and tell them if their demands would be met.
