ZAGREB, Jan 6 (Hina) - The Zagreb Police deputy chief, Dubravko Novak, told a news conference on Thursday afternoon that in the last three days there had been several protest rallies in the area of Zagreb the organisation of which had not been reported previously and which were staged contrary to the law on public rallies.

The first rally of this kind was organised by the election team of Boris Miksic, a presidential candidate who ran in the first round of the presidential elections last Sunday and came in third (which eliminated him from the election's run-off).

After that rally and after Miksic left the gathered, another presidential candidate Miroslav Rajh (who was the tenth at the elections) and reporter Domagoj Margetic continued with protests in downtown Zagreb, Novak told the conference.

Rajh and Margetic led protesters towards the main offices of the Croatian Democratic Union (HDZ) and in front of the flat of the the incumbent President Stjepan Mesic, who is seeking his second term in office.

On Tuesday evening, some 200 protesters gathered in Jelacic Square in Zagreb, and being led by Rajh and Margetic they walked through main streets and obstructed public traffic. They stopped in front of the HDZ main offices.

Novak stressed the organisers had failed to report the organisation of rallies and thus violated the above-mentioned law. Furthermore, they also violates the law on traffic safety, Novak said.

That's why the police sent summons to Margetic and Rajh for interviews.

On Wednesday morning the police came in touch with Rajh's mother who informed his son of the call from the police. The police, however, could not contact Margetic and therefore a warrant for his arrest was issued, Novak explained.

Neither Rajh nor Margetic responded to the summons, which's why the police arrested them at about 19:30 hrs Wednesday while they were sitting in a Zagreb cafe. They were then brought in for an interview in connection with misdemeanours they had committed in the last two days, the police official added.

After the questioning, Rahj and Margetic were taken to custody overnight and on Thursday morning they were interviewed by an investigating judge on duty.

After being interviewed by the judge, the two were released at 12:45 hrs Thursday. They will receive letters with information on misdemeanour charges pressed against them, at their home addresses.
