KARLOVAC, Jan 7 (Hina) - The Karlovac County branch of the Croatian
Democratic Union (HDZ) said in a statement on Friday that members of
presidential candidate Stjepan Mesic's election team on Thursday tore down
posters with the photo of HDZ presidential candidate Jadranka Kosor during
Mesic's visit to Duga Resa, some 60 kilometres south-west of Zagreb. The local
police confirmed this evening that it had pressed petty offence charges against
a 49-year-old man from Zagreb. The HDZ statement read that the man who headed the campaign to tear down
Kosor's posters was identified as Perica Martinovic, a member of Mesic's
election team.
The Karlovac County police said that the 49-year-old man from Zagreb
tore down two posters that had been put up in front of the local church in Sv.
Petar Mreznicki near Duga Resa yesterday morning and that he was approached by
two police officers, who asked him for his ID card. The man failed to produce
his ID and gave a false name and other data, which is why he will be charged
for violating the public peace and order and the Law on ID Card, county police
spokesman Tomislav Kotic said.
Kotic added that the police did not have information that there were
more persons tearing down Kosor's posters in Sv. Petar Mreznicki yesterday.
