Representatives of ethnic Hungarians, who gathered for a two-day conference in the northern Serbian city of Subotica, on Friday issued a declaration expressing their disappointment with the failure of a recent referendum in Hungary at which Hungarian citizens opposed the idea of granting Hungarian citizenship to ethnic Hungarians living outside Hungary.
"In light of the fact that in 1991 Croatia made it possible for ethnic Croats living in other countries to acquire Croatian citizenship, we expect Hungary to solve the issue in the same way," Sandor Jakab, the leader of the Democratic Association of Croatian Hungarians, said in Subotica.
He added that 16,700 ethnic Hungarians in Croatia were looking forward to such an outcome.
