ZAGREB, Jan 4 (Hina) - The presidential candidate of the ruling Croatian Democratic Union (HDZ), Deputy Prime Minister Jadranka Kosor, said on Tuesday that by entering the second round of presidential election she proved that her rival, the incumbent President Stjepan Mesic, was not unbeatable.

Speaking at a press conference in Zagreb, Kosor said that she would propose that a law should be adopted as soon as possible in order to repay the debt to pensioners and that the government should step up procedure for establishing entrepreneurial zones in order to enable additional employment.

Kosor said that she would request that the oil company INA additionally cut prices of oil products in order to improve living standards.

She said that in the second round of the election campaign she would fight to win the confidence of the voters who did not support Mesic in the first round of voting last Sunday, and said she was confident of "winning this battle despite unfavourable circumstances".

"The campaign will be very tough and harsh. Now we are one on one, and it is my obligation to confront Mesic with arguments, although he has not apologised to me (for his insults during the first round of campaigning)," the HDZ candidate said.

Kosor dismissed allegations by independent candidate Boris Miksic that there was a deal between her and Mesic's election teams over election results. She said that Miksic, who came in third in the Sunday vote, should address his complaints to the State Election Commission, and expressed hope that she would meet him.

Asked how she would attract Miksic's voters, Kosor said she would do so by restoring dignity to the office of president of the republic and fighting for national interests. "Croatia needs a president who knows how to work and who has work results behind him."

Responding to a journalist's comment that Miksic had called for a review of cooperation with the Hague war crimes tribunal, Kosor said that Croatia must continue cooperating with the tribunal because it was bound by documents of the Croatian parliament.

On the subject of a ban on abortion, Kosor said that the president of the country may propose a referendum on this "very politicised issue", and added that her opinion was that life should be protected from the moment of conception until natural death.

Kosor called on the electronic media to explain why they had broadcast the results of opinion polls rather than official results by the State Election Commission, which she said had caused confusion among the public.
