ZAGREB, Dec 22 (Hina) - The State Election Commission on Wednesday
rejected a complaint by the presidential candidate of the ruling Croatian
Democratic Union (HDZ) party, Jadranka Kosor, in which she demanded that the
national television network HTV be banned from broadcasting a programme on the
100th anniversary of the Croatian Peasant Party (HSS).The DIP explained it did not have the authority under the law to impose
bans on television broadcasts.
Kosor said that it had been announced that her main rival, the incumbent
President Stjepan Mesic, who enjoys the support of the HSS, would attend the
celebration and appear on the programme.
The DIP said it was monitoring whether HTV gave each candidate the same
amount of airtime to present their electoral platforms, and that it was a
matter of editorial policy to distinguish the activities of presidential
candidates from their professional activities at the time of an election
campaign.
