ZAGREB, Dec 30 (Hina) - Every eighth employed Croatian was on fake sick leave in 2006, according to a survey conducted by Moj.Posao (My Job) web portal.

The average duration of the fake sick leave was four days, according to the survey conducted among more than 1,000 employees and over 100 employers in December.

The results show that 13 percent of respondents admitted that they called in sick when they were actually fine.

The most common reasons for going on fake sick leave are fatigue (48 percent of respondents), being under stress (38 percent), family obligations (14 percent), interview for another job (13 percent), extended weekend (10 percent), travelling (eight percent) and illness of a family member (six percent).

If they were absent for one day, employees most frequently excuse themselves with having nausea, headache, influenza or high temperature.

Almost two thirds of the employers said that in 2006 some of their employees were absent one day for health reasons.

The survey shows that the employers believe that 25 percent i.e. one fourth of all sick leaves were fake.

A half of the employers in the survey say they have found out that their employees lied about the real reasons for the absence from the work.

In such cases, 74 percent reprimanded the employee in concern, 16 percent cut their salary for the period of fake sick leave, and 13 percent fired such workers.

According to the survey, employees with low salaries more frequently resort to fake sick leaves, as well as employees who have less then 18 days of holidays in a year.
