WASHINGTON, Dec 15 (Hina) - The president of the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (ICTY), Fausto Pocar, on Friday submitted a report to the UN Security Council, stating that the last six months were the most productive period in the tribunal's 13 years, with six trials involving 25 indictees having been conducted simultaneously at one moment.

Pocar stressed in his address that the tribunal's increased productivity was the result of the significant reorganisation of trial chambers and efficient pre-trial management, which made it possible, among other things, to start two trials with the largest number of indictees, for crimes in Srebrenica and Kosovo, half a year earlier.

The ICTY's Appeals Chamber in 2006 completed eight procedures with 11 indictees.

Of 161 indictees, cases related to 100 indictees have been closed and most remaining cases are at the stage of main hearing or appeals procedure.

Pocar confirmed that all trials would be completed by 2009 and all appeals proceedings two years later.

The ICTY president also informed the Security Council of the measures taken in the case of indictee Vojislav Seselj and his hunger strike, some of his demands that were met, his recovery in hospital and return to detention.

As in previous reports, Pocar voiced deep concern with the fact that the ICTY had been urging the arrest of Radovan Karadzic and Ratko Mladic for a decade to no avail.

He called on Security Council member-countries to demonstrate full support to the ICTY in its final years.
