PEU urges fast accession of Croatia to EU and EU's southeastward expansion

ZAGREB, Dec 11 (Hina) - The International Pan-European Union (PEU) has adopted a resolution expressing strong support for a fast and unobstructed process of talks between Croatia and the European Union, the organisation's Croatian branch said in a press release on Monday.
ZAGREB, Dec 11 (Hina) - The International Pan-European Union (PEU) has adopted a resolution expressing strong support for a fast and unobstructed process of talks between Croatia and the European Union, the organisation's Croatian branch said in a press release on Monday.

At a session held from December 8 to 10, Europe's oldest pro-integration organisation adopted two resolutions proposed by the Croatian delegation led by Pavo Barisic, chairman of PEU Croatia, and Mislav Jezic, a member of the Croatian Academy of Arts and Sciences.

"The International Pan-European Union (...) expresses strong support for a fast and unobstructed process of talks between the European Union and the Republic of Croatia as a candidate country, with due respect for the essential political and economic interests of the candidate country," one of the resolutions says.

The document cites a very high level of support among Croatian citizens and political parties for EU membership.

Croatia has already met most of the Copenhagen criteria better than some of the present EU members did, and by its size and development it cannot present a problem to the EU's absorption capacity, the resolution says.

The other resolution proposed by the Croatian delegation and accepted by the PEU calls for the expansion of the European Union to countries of Southeast Europe.

Countries of Southeast Europe cannot remain a vacuum in the territory of the united Europe, but should be given a European perspective that has been formally promised to them, through concrete and active efforts and care on the part of the European Union, the PEU said in its second resolution.

The resolution says that the enlargement process should proceed in accordance with the efforts and progress of each country, namely Bosnia and Herzegovina, Macedonia, Montenegro, Kosovo and Serbia.

The fast accession of Croatia to the EU will be the best incentive for the faster adoption of European standards and the faster resolution of political and other issues in all the countries of Southeast Europe which have already been guaranteed a European perspective by EU representatives, the resolution says.
