Racan told the press that Rehn had warned that it would not be good for Croatia to decide unilaterally on activating the ZERP and that a possible unilateral decision could cause problems.
Rehn suggested that we discuss the topic with Italy and Slovenia, the Croatian representative said.
"We should talk and reach a consensus, if it is possible. The national committee that will convene on 18 and 19 December shall discuss the topic and we shall get more concrete and expert answers," Racan said.
He went on to say that the committee believed in the activation of the Zone and they would insist on it. In the meantime, much must be done to ensure its activation, he added.
Racan said that Rehn and he had discussed the Union's decision to partially suspend Turkey's accession talks, which Racan assessed could indirectly help Croatia to proceed with accession negotiations individually and enter the EU by this decade's end.
