A representative of the European Commission, Davor Percan, said the purpose of the project, worth 497,000 euros, was to improve the protection of Croatia's nature and biological diversity.
Stating that this was one of the most successful CARDS projects in Croatia, Percin added that Zagreb had made great headway in adopting European standards.
The specific objectives of the project were to establish a network of green activists at local levels, inaugurate a national information technology system covering biological diversity, introduce EU standards in plans for managing the protected areas and to facilitate the Croatia-EU negotiations on the environment protection chapter, including topics about birds and their habitats.
