25,000 people rally in central Belgrade in support of hunger-striking Radical party leader

BELGRADE, Dec 2 (Hina) - About 25,000 supporters of the Serbian Radical Party (SRS) rallied outside the United States Embassy in central Belgrade on Saturday to demonstrate their support for SRS leader Vojislav Seselj who has been on a hunger strike for three weeks in his cell at the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (ICTY) in The Hague.

Twenty-two days ago, after four years in detention, Seselj "began his last and hardest fight against injustice and humiliation, ready to put his own life at stake," Seselj's deputy Tomislav Nikolic told the rally, calling for an end to "the brutal murdering of Serbs" at the ICTY.

"Today we're not accidentally here in front of the embassy of the world's biggest power. We're not accidentally in front of a building where (Serbian President) Boris Tadic and (Prime Minister) Vojislav Kostunica receive their orders and submit their reports," Nikolic said, demanding that the US "stop murdering Seselj and destroying Serbia."

He vowed that "the Radicals will carry out the task that Seselj gave them" and win the forthcoming parliamentary elections, scheduled for January 22.

SRS secretary-general Aleksandar Vucic said that "Seselj is being murdered in The Hague because of his dignified comportment and because he went there as an honourable man to protect the Serbian people and state," unlike "puppets on a string" such as Tadic and Kostunica.

Demonstrators were carrying placards, saying "The Hague - The Murderer of Heroes", "Long Live Great Serbia", "Long Live Seselj" and "Stop The Hague's Tyranny", photographs of Seselj and SRS flags.

No incidents were reported during the rally.

On Friday, the ICTY decided to adjourn Seselj's trial until his condition was assessed.
