The 32-year old Croat was pepper-sprayed during an altercation with Toronto police officers on 12 November in the city's west end.
His heart stopped after he suffered severe brain swelling from the spray. He was taken to hospital and put on life support, and although he woke up from coma, Drnasic succumbed to his injuries shortly before 3p.m. Monday.
Drnasin, who was born in the southern Croatian city of Split, was the first Croatian native to graduate from the prestigious U.S. Military Academy at West Point, but he had a troubled past. He suffered from post-traumatic stress disorder as a result of service with the military in Croatia and had a troubled past. He also tried to stab his ex-girlfriend to death and was conditionally sentenced to six months in prison.
The Toronto police are probing the incident. At least seven police officers were involved in Drnasin's takedown and arrest.
