HDZ MP dismisses allegations of electoral fraud at previous party conventions

VIROVITICA, Nov 25 (Hina) - The chairman of the Virovitica County branch of the ruling Croatian Democratic Union (HDZ) and member of Parliament, Josip Djakic, has dismissed as untrue allegations by parliamentary deputies Ivan Drmic and Branimir Glavas that ballots had been stolen at the party's seventh and ninth election conventions.

"We reject the lies and deceptions of member of Parliament Ivan Drmic, because he was not a member of the electoral commission at the time nor was he in a position to rig the vote," Djakic said at a press conference on Saturday.

The secretary of the HDZ county branch and mayor of Virovitica, Zvonko Koznjak, insisted that there had been no electoral fraud because as a member of the electoral committee he had personally participated in the vote count.

"Drmic and Glavas may have wanted to rig the vote because they are inclined to scheming and were sitting on two stools. If Ivic Pasalic had won they would have joined him," Koznjak said, referring to the former political adviser to the late president Franjo Tudjman.

Koznjak said that "people like Ivic Pasalic and Branimir Glavas (...) ruined the HDZ of Franjo Tudjman and wanted to do the same with the present HDZ."
