The person in question is a 43-year-old Croatian national who was sentenced in absentia in 2000 by a Croatian court to 12 years in prison for a murder committed in Vukovar in 1991, police official Espen Skjerven said.
Skjerven said that the man, whose identity he did not reveal, had been living in Norway since 1998 and that he had been in custody since October 6.
The Croatian request will be discussed by a district court and in the case of appeal by higher courts. The final decision on extradition rests with the Norwegian Ministry of Justice.
Hina has been unable to obtain the person's identity from Croatian authorities. The Ministry of Justice said that Croatia had asked Norway to extradite two persons -- Milan Gojkovic, age 60, and Damir Sireta, age 43.
According to the DPA report, the person in question is most likely Sireta, because Croatia requested his extradition on October 30, saying that he was entitled to a retrial.
In May 2000, the Vukovar County Court sentenced Sireta in absentia to 12 years' imprisonment for the murder of prisoner of war Ekrem Nakicevic. Sireta and the first defendant Stevan Curnic ordered Nakicevic to run and then mowed him down with bursts of gunfire.
Curnic was the only accused in the case within reach of the judicial authorities and was sentenced to 15 years in prison, while the other accused were convicted in absentia and given prison terms ranging from 3.5 to 20 years. Croatia issued international warrants for their arrest.
