State Department dismisses reports about change of position on constitutional reforms in Bosnia

SARAJEVO, Oct 20 (Hina) - The US Embassy in Bosnia-Herzegovina on Friday dismissed claims in the local media that US President George W. Bush had announced a change in Washington's position on constitutional changes in Bosnia-Herzegovina.
SARAJEVO, Oct 20 (Hina) - The US Embassy in Bosnia-Herzegovina on Friday dismissed claims in the local media that US President George W. Bush had announced a change in Washington's position on constitutional changes in Bosnia-Herzegovina.

"President Bush has not engaged in any discussions of the Council of Europe recommendations on the constitution of Bosnia and Herzegovina," reads a statement by the State Department carried by the US Embassy in Sarajevo.

The statement reads that media reports announcing such a possibility are incorrect.

The Dnevni Avaz daily of Friday brings on its cover a story which has pulled Croatian Prime Minister Ivo Sanader into political debates in Bosnia.

Citing anonymous diplomatic sources, the daily, which openly supports Haris Silajdzic and his Party for Bosnia-Herzegovina, said that during a meeting with Bush, Sanader had been given assurances that the US administration would stop supporting the set of constitutional reforms agreed on in spring this year.

The report in Dnevni Avaz leads to the conclusion that Washington now intends to support Silajdzic, who has opposed constitutional reforms demanding the abolishment of entity voting, which was also supported in a resolution adopted by the Council of Europe on June 29 this year.

The State Department, however, says in its statement that the United States continues to strongly support and urge the early adoption of the package of constitutional amendments agreed to by the six political parties in March.

"Their adoption would be a decisive step forward for Bosnia and Herzegovina and would advance Bosnia and Herzegovina"s aspirations to join NATO and the EU," the statement said.

The same position was taken by the Peace Implementation Council (PIC) Steering Board, which held a session in Sarajevo on Thursday and Friday.
