Nobody was killed in the explosions, which shattered windows on apartments and shops in Jagodina and Cuprija, some 20 kilometres from Paracin. The road linking Nis and Belgrade was closed to traffic, and railway traffic was stopped.
Serbian Minister of the Interior Dragan Jocic told the Beta news agency that seven explosions were heard in the warehouse where different types of explosive were kept.
Defence Ministry spokesman Zoran Puhac told Radio B92 that the warehouse at the "Karadjordjevo brdo" military range had been built in line with security standards and that it contained various types of ammunition.
Science Minister Aleksandar Popovic told Radio B92 that there was no danger of environmental pollution that could threaten the population.
Police sealed off the town and a large number of police, soldiers and fire-fighting vehicles were in the streets.
A military analyst of the Belgrade daily "Politika", Ljubodrag Stojadinovic, told Radio B92 that the explosions were caused by serious negligence.
