Montenegrin leader Djukanovic says he will no longer be PM

PODGORICA, Oct 6 (Hina) - Three prominent figures on Montenegro's political scene - Milo Djukanovic, Svetozar Marovic and Predrag Bulatovic - have announced their withdrawal from politics, according to local media.
PODGORICA, Oct 6 (Hina) - Three prominent figures on Montenegro's political scene - Milo Djukanovic, Svetozar Marovic and Predrag Bulatovic - have announced their withdrawal from politics, according to local media.

While Djukanovic and Marovic from the ruling Democratic Party of Socialists (DPS) explain their decision with their intention to be more engaged in their businesses, Bulatovic of the pro-Serb Socialist People's Party (SNP) and his close aides will withdraw owing to their poor performance at the last parliamentary elections in September.

After the elections, it was assumed that Djukanovic would remain the country's prime minister.

Upon his decision to leave all the posts in the government, it was announced that the current Justice Minister Zeljko Sturanovic, also a DPS senior official, would be the premier-designate.

Given that the DPS holds a majority of seats in the new parliament, Sturanovic will very likely be the new Prime Minister.

The outgoing PM Djukanovic, who is the DPS chief, refuted some allegations that he was giving up the post of premiership amid pressure from the international community.

He said he would stay at the helm of the DPS party and be engaged in his business.

Djukanovic said he had received some suggestions from the international community that he should stay in the office of PM.

However, he believes that his withdrawal from state posts will be an opportunity for homogenisation of pro-European forces in Montenegro. In this context Djukanovic recalls that the Opposition has often had a grudge against him, accusing him of being an obstacle to cooperation among political parties in the country.
