PODGORICA, Sept 10 (Hina) - Polling stations in Montenegro's parliamentary and local elections were closed at 9 pm on Sunday and according to nongovernmental observers the turnout by 8.30 pm was 69.7 per cent, about 16 per cent less than at a referendum on Montenegro's independence held in May.

The Election Commission said the elections were held without major complaints from political parties.

Twelve slates ran in the polls and 484,430 citizens were eligible to vote.

According to public opinion polls, the ruling coalition of Prime Minister Milo Djukanovic's Democratic Party of Socialists and Parliament Speaker Ranko Krivokapic's Social Democratic Party has the best chances of winning, even of winning an absolute majority.

Their coalition includes the Croatian Civic Initiative, the only political party representing the interests of Croats in Montenegro. Under a coalition agreement, it is guaranteed at least one seat in parliament.
