President comments on allegations of conflict with PM during U.S. trip

UCKA, Sept 24 (Hina) - Croatian President Stjepan Mesic on Sunday commented on media claims that he gave a yellow card to the ambassador to the United States, Neven Jurica, and on his alleged conflict with Prime Minister Ivo Sanader during a visit to the U.S. earlier this week.

Mesic was answering questions from the press while visiting a construction site on the Pula-Karlovac pipeline on Ucka mountain near the northern Adriatic city of Rijeka in the company of Istria County prefect Ivan Jakovcic.

Commenting on media claims about the yellow card to Jurica, Mesic said he had said that figuratively and that "it means that I didn't give him a red card".

Asked about his alleged conflict with Sanader regarding competence during the visit to the U.S., Mesic said there were certainly misunderstandings, although he and the prime minister had previously agreed that Sanader would address the UN General Assembly.

However, "wrong information appeared that the premier was leading the Croatian delegation," he said.

Mesic said such things would never happen again and that he still had to talk about this case with the US Embassy.

Asked about his satisfaction with the recent trips to Cuba and the U.S., Mesic said there was too much talk about lobbying in Croatia, whereas more attention should be paid to how Croatia's economy and companies could regain the positions they once had on foreign markets.

Asked to comment on some media's announcements that next week the State Prosecutor's Office would press charges against some managers from the Brodosplit shipyard on suspicion of involvement in the laundering of six million US dollars, Mesic said he was not familiar with the case in detail.

"The judiciary and the police must take action against those responsible, regardless of their positions, and then a court must hand down a ruling," he added.
