During the action, 651 mines and booby traps were detected and removed from four million square metres in Karlovac and its surroundings, and al of this cost almost five million US dollars.
The donations for this purpose were made by members of rotary clubs in Karlovac, Vienna and other cities as well as by the Austrian, the U.S. and Croatian governments.
The US Ambassador to Zagreb, Robert Bradtke, who attended today's monument-unveiling ceremony, said the US Administration had so far invested USD 18 million in mine clearance activities in Croatia, pledging more donations.
The head of the Croatian Mine Action Centre, Otto Jungwirth, said that some 960 square kilometres of Croatian territory were still regarded as mine-suspected areas and the mine removal would require EUR1.35 billion.
