Bosnian war victims feel entitled to compensation

SARAJEVO, Sept 17 (Hina) - Victims of the 1992-1995 war in Bosnia-Herzegovina have the right to be compensated for the gross violations of their human rights and the matter should be regulated by a law at the state level or by filing individual lawsuits, according to the conclusions of a two-day conference which was held in Sarajevo over the weekend.

The conference was organised by the Croat association of former detention camp inmates in Bosnia and the association of former detention camp inmates of Bosnia-Herzegovina, with the support of the International Commission for Missing Persons (ICMP).

Murat Tahiric, the head of the latter association, told a news conference that the state authorities in Bosnia had not yet established a comprehensive programme for solving the status of former camp inmates, although ten years had passed since the end of the war.

Therefore, individual lawsuits against the state seem to be the only instrument, although a lacking one, for the injured parties to seek compensation, Tahiric said.

Lawyer Josip Sladic informed the conference participants of the legal practice and experience from Croatia.

He warned that many war victims have not enough time to wait for the state to regulate the matter by a law.

"Many victims are elderly people who will not live to see the adoption of a relevant law," Sladic said, encouraging all who regard themselves as war victims to file compensation lawsuits.
