Jovic announces appeal against Hague tribunal judgement

SPLIT, Aug 30 (Hina) - The former editor-in-chief of the Split-based Slobodna Dalmacija newspaper, Josip Jovic, announced on Wednesday he would appeal against the judgement of the Hague war crimes tribunal which found him guilty of contempt and gave him 30 days to pay a fine of 20,000 euros.

"We will appeal as soon as we receive the judgement in order to gain time, because an appeal stays the execution of a judgement," Jovic told Hina in an interview, adding that he was in constant contact with his lawyer.

"It is regrettable that in its explanation of the judgement the trial chamber cited all the allegations from the indictment, which has never happened before," Jovic said.

"It is an absurdity from the point of view of law and common sense, from the indictment to the judgement," he said. "The trial chamber and the prosecution act like one body and it is hard to speak of the division of those functions, because it seems as if everything was agreed in advance, so I could hardly have expected a different sentence, except possibly a heavier one."

"The fine of 20,000 euros is no small matter to me, although it may not seem so to members of the trial chamber, who receive that much as a monthly salary. I might rather exchange the fine for a prison term, because I cannot pay it without going into debt," Jovic said.

Jovic said it was also possible that, if the prosecution appealed, the punishment could be converted into a prison sentence or even a heavier fine.
