Belgrade says Ahtisaari's statements in contravention of his mandate

BELGRADE, Aug 28 (Hina) - The Serbian negotiating team for Kosovo has condemned recent statements by the UN special envoy for the status of Kosovo, Martti Ahtisaari, as being in contravention of his mandate.

The statements "that 'the Serbs are guilty as a nation, that every nation in the world has a burden it should pay for and that the policy run by Slobodan Milosevic has to be taken into account in deciding Kosovo's status' seriously bring into question Ahtisaari's position as special envoy of the UN secretary general for the future status of Kosovo," the Serbian negotiating team said in a statement from a meeting held on Monday.

The meeting was chaired by President Boris Tadic, and among those attending were Prime Minister Vojislav Kostunica and Foreign Minister Vuk Draskovic. They agreed that "all the necessary diplomatic and other steps should be taken to resolve the situation created by Ahtisaari's statements without causing damage to the negotiating process."

The meeting focused on the state of negotiations on the future status of Kosovo, forthcoming activities, and preparations for the next round of talks on decentralisation, religious and cultural heritage and the protection of the ethnic communities.

The chairman of the Serbian Assembly, Predrag Markovic, has said that a session on Kosovo will be called when it is requested by the government or at least 84 deputies. Consultations are currently under way within parliamentary parties, and the G17 Plus party has announced that an emergency session of the Assembly might be held next week.
