UNMIK strongly opposes Kosovo's division

PRISTINA, Aug 14 (Hina) - The United Nations Mission in Kosovo (UNMIK) reiterated on Monday that the international community firmly dismissed the possibility of dividing Kosovo, as part of a final solution for the status of that UN-govern province.
PRISTINA, Aug 14 (Hina) - The United Nations Mission in Kosovo (UNMIK) reiterated on Monday that the international community firmly dismissed the possibility of dividing Kosovo, as part of a final solution for the status of that UN-govern province.

Commenting on a statement of the head of Serbian coordinating centre for Kosovo, Sanda Raskovic-Ivic, who said Serbia would accept the division of Kosovo should there be no other longer-term solution for Kosovo's status, spokesman for the UNMIK Aleksandar Ivanko said "the division of Kosovo will no be tolerated and that is final".

UNMIK and the international community were always stressing that there would be no division of Kosovo and statements advocating such a solution are not useful, Ivanko told Belgrade-based Beta agency.

Speaking about Serbs in Kosovo who are refusing to cooperate with Kosovo authorities, Ivanko said that minorities in every country realise their interests through established, legal institutions, underlining that Kosovo Serbs must cooperate with Pristina, and not only with Belgrade.

The international community in Kosovo is trying to avoid the situation that took place in Sarajevo in 1996 when thousands of Serbs fled the region, although the rights of number of them were not threatened, but they did it because they felt they were threatened.

Ivanko advocated dialogue between Kosovo Serbs and authorities in Pristina.
