ICTY official says footage of alleged war crimes shouldn't be politicised

SARAJEVO, Aug 21 (Hina) - The spokesman for the Hague war crimes tribunal's prosecution, Anton Nikiforov, has warned against politicising video footage of war crimes committed allegedly by Bosnian army general Atif Dudakovic and his soldiers in the area of the western Bosnian town of Bihac, the Bosnian national broadcasting company reported on Monday.

Nikiforov was commenting on photos of video recordings published by Zagreb's Vecernji List daily of Monday. The daily claimed the recordings showed members of the Bosnian Army Fifth Corps, with Dudakovic as its commander, kill soldiers loyal to Fikret Abdic, who advocated the establishment of the Autonomous Region of Western Bosnia.

Vecernji List claims that Dudakovic personally ordered the killing of captured negotiators for Abdic.

Nikiforov said it was clear from the footage that the crimes had been committed, but he warned that an investigation was needed to identify the perpetrators of the crime and those who ordered it.

Such claims have provoked contradictory reactions in the area of the western town of Cazin, with some claiming that they are refueling the animosity that existed between Abdic's supporters and supporters of Alija Izetbegovic during the war.
